The London Abseil FAQ

Do I need to book in advance?

To avoid disappointment we highly recommend you pre-book your abseil via the website. Occasionally there is space on the day, but to guarantee your place, please book in advance. All our available dates can be viewed and booked through our online booking calendar. If you have any questions about availability please get in touch.

Are there any restrictions?

To complete the ArcelorMittal Orbit you must be over 14 years old.  Under 18 year olds require parental consent completed via an online waiver and adult supervision at a maximum ratio of 1 : 2. Please note, anyone accompanying an under 18 is required to pay entry into the attraction – this can be done online here: www.arcelormittalorbit.com.

There is no upper age limit as long as you are fit and healthy.

There is a weight limit of 19 stone and you must be able to fit in the harnesses. If you are pregnant, unfortunately you cannot take part in the abseil.  Please see our Terms & Conditions for more information.

We require prior notice for those with accessibility requirements (min. 2 weeks), so that we can cater appropriately and ensure we have the correct equipment and staffing in place.

Please note that all tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable so it is important to familiarise yourself with our terms and conditions before purchase.

For further information please email: info@wireandsky.co.uk

What are the opening times?

Generally our operating hours on abseiling days are between 10am to 5.30pm. For individual bookings please check the availability in the bookings calendar on our website (click on ‘Book this experience’).  For group bookings, please contact the office on 020 3198 0407 or email info@wireandsky.co.uk

What should I wear?

Your shoulders, midriff and upper legs should be covered. No loose clothing please e.g. long skirts or flowing cardigans. On your feet wear closed toe shoes, trainers or boots that will not fall off. Open toe shoes, flipflops, sandals or high heels are not permitted. Long hair must be tied back. Jewellery and scarves must be removed. Weather at the top of the ArcelorMittal Orbit is often magnified, so bring a waterproof jacket and warm layer. Fancy dress may be permitted but please see fancy dress FAQ for more info.

What time should I arrive?

Customers should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled abseil slot (the time should be on your ticket).  Arriving after the scheduled start time means you may not be able to abseil and will not be entitled to a refund. There will be no compensation paid for consequential losses or other expenses of a related nature.

Please bear in mind that it is at least a 15 minute walk across the Olympic Park to the base of the ArcelorMittal Orbit structure from most nearby public transport hubs

What happens in bad weather?

We constantly monitor the weather situation and will keep you updated in advance if we feel that the weather may affect your booking. We reserve the right to postpone abseils due to bad weather (strong winds, heavy rain, electric storms etc.) for safety reasons.

If your abseil has been postponed due to bad weather, we will endeavour to reschedule your booking to the next available date that is suitable to you. Alternatively, we will issue you with a voucher code that can be used to re-book your abseil at a later date.

Do I need to bring anything with me?

Please bring an electronic version of your booking confirmation email (this can be printed if you prefer). Any problems, please contact info@wireandsky.co.uk.

Is there somewhere to keep my belongings?

There are lockers available to put your personal belongings in but these are left at your own risk.  They are not particularly large so please only bring what you need on the day.

Can I bring spectators?

Spectators are welcome at the The London Abseil. The ArcelorMittal Orbit is open to the public most days of the year. During these times friends and family can purchase tickets (www.arcelormittalorbit.com) to watch the abseil from the top of the structure. This also allows spectators to watch from beside the landing site, although there is limited space.  Also please note that there is an exclusion zone around the actual landing site and entry by public is strictly forbidden for safety reasons.

It is also possible to watch from the roof terrace cafe, when it is open, or from just outside the boundary of the ArcelorMittal Orbit next to the abseil landing area – both provide a great view of the abseil and do not require paid entry to the attraction.

How do I get there?

The nearest tube station is Stratford. From there you need to walk through the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (approximately 15 minute walk) to the base of the ArcelorMittal Orbit (you can’t miss it!). The ArcelorMittal Orbit is signposted from the waterfront.  The address is: Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, 3 Thornton St, London, E20 2AD, however there is no parking direct at the venue so we suggest you make use of the pay and display cark parks at Westfield Shopping Centre.

Where is the nearest car park?

The nearest car park is car park B at Westfield Stratford City Shopping Centre. If you have a blue badge then there are 6 blue badge spaces located on Thornton Street, behind the ArcelorMittal Orbit, however you will need to contact Park Security in advance to book this – please see click here for info and contact details.

Can children participate?

The experience is limited to people aged 14 and over. Under 18 year olds require parental consent and adult supervision at a maximum ratio of 1:2. Unfortunately children under the age of 14 years old will not be permitted to abseil.

Are the abseils accessible for disabled guests?

We aim to make the abseils as accessible as possible.  Call 020 3198 0407 to discuss your requirements with us and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.  Please note that we do require prior notice so we can accommodate additional requirements (minimum 2 weeks).

What if I change my mind?

Our abseil instructors are used to helping abseil participants experiencing high levels of anxiety. They will support you to the best of their ability and give you positive encouragement to go ahead with your abseil. Unfortunately, if you do change your mind on of before the day, we would not be able to issue a refund or give you another opportunity at a later time or date.

Will a photographer be present on the day?

Our abseil team aim to take a picture of you as you start your abseil – any pictures taken will be available to view and purchase via a QR code after your abseil (make sure you keep your wristband, as this has your unique QR code!).

Please bear in mind that the team are there primarily for your safety and enjoyment, so we can’t guarantee everyone will get a picture, or that we will get you a perfect Instagram shot, however our team are great and they’ll do their best to get at least one photo of you as you abseil!

Can I buy tickets on the day?

It is unlikely that you will be able to buy abseiling tickets on the day as availability is limited and tickets can sell out months in advance.  We strongly recommend that you buy tickets prior to your abseil, particularly if you are travelling a long way to get to the ArcelorMittal Orbit.

Tickets can be purchased online up to the time of the abseil, so if you decide you’d like to abseil on the day, we recommend checking online to book any available places that are left.

What if I have lost my ticket?

Don’t worry. Email info@wireandsky.co.uk or call 020 3198 0407 and we will do our best to help you.

How long does the experience last?

We estimate your experience will last around 90 minutes but this can depend on numbers and weather conditions.

Can I bring my own camera?

No. No loose items can be carried during the abseil for health and safety reasons.

We do, however allow customers to bring their phone up to the top of the ArcelorMittal Orbit (this is at your own risk). Bear in mind, any phones brought up are placed in a pouch whilst you abseil and will not be accessible to you once you are abseiling.

Can I bring medication?

Yes, but you will need to inform our abseil instructors and leave it with them whilst you abseil and you will have to retrieve it afterwards.

Can I wear my glasses / hearing aid?

Yes, as long as they are not loose fitting or liable to fall off.

Can I wear fancy dress?

You can wear fancy dress as long as you are not wearing any loose fitting items that could get caught in the safety system (for example capes or wigs) or loose items that are liable to fall off during your descent.  Look at our “What should I wear’ FAQ for more information on what is appropriate. It is important that you adhere to our Terms & Conditions regarding correct attire. We reserve the right to refuse entry to the abseil if we deem your attire to be inappropriate.

If you are unsure, please get in touch with us in advance of your abseil.

How do we get up to the abseil platform?

There is a lift that takes you to the top of the structure.

How do I use a Gift Card/Voucher?

Gift cards are redeemable online.  Choose a time and date that is convenient and enter the code on your gift card/voucher into our booking system (click on ‘Book this experience’ on our website).

Once you have selected your date and time, there will be a ‘discount/voucher code’ box where you can input your code.

Can I do the slide as well?

The ArcelorMittal Orbit operates the slide, so you will need to buy tickets directly from them (www.arcelormittalorbit.com). Please leave a window of at least 2.5 hours to compete the abseil before your slide booking or make sure that you will be able to arrive 15 minutes before your abseil slot, if you wish to slide first.

Match / Special Event Days

Please note that on match / special event days the park can be extremely busy and car parking even for Blue Badge holders may be unavailable.  All London Stadium events can be viewed here, and Olympic Park events here.

How do I use my electronic ticket?

You will be emailed an order confirmation that will include your ticket attached. This does not have to be printed and can be shown on a mobile device on arrival.

I don't have a printer or smart phone

If necessary just take a note of the booking reference and bring it along with you, as well as with some ID.

Do I have to wear a helmet?

The Construction (Head Protection) Regulations 1989 require suitable head protection, normally safety helmets, to be provided and worn when there is a risk of injury.  Safety is paramount at Wire & Sky and a helmet is key PPE that a customer must wear whilst undertaking The London Abseil activity.  If no suitable helmet can be found to fit on the head of the customer, they will, unfortunately, have to be turned away. With the exemption of any follower of the Sikh religion while he is wearing a turban under the the Road Traffic Act 1988 – Wearing of protective headgear.
